The Tour for the Fans was a concert tour by Lupe Fiasco around the United States. It began at The Neptune Theatre on January 13, 2016 in Seattle, Washington, and concluded on May 6, 2016 at Iron City in Birmingham, Alabama.[1] In a statement to HipHopDX, he said, "I've dedicated this tour to my fans who have stood by me as I work on new material for them in 2016." Opening acts on select dates included Billy Blue, The Boy Illinois, and Zverse.[2] Later that year, he unveiled dates for a fall tour that ran from October to December.[3]

Background[]

The tour was announced on December 28, 2015, with a list of seventeen dates.[4] The second leg was added in March 2016.[5] A majority of his set list contained songs from his fifth studio album, Tetsuo & Youth, which was released in January 2015.

During the last part of his set list for the New York show, he revealed that he would leave the hip hop scene after his albums Drogas, Skulls, and ROY come out in 2016 and The Cool 2 in 2017. After his New York City show on October 18, he took to Twitter to state of being followed by the police. He remarked, "When the NYPD follows you from the show then pulls you over 10 deep to the search the car cuz we from Chicago! Hahaha…I ain't even mad." While he later deleted the tweet, he had mentioned before that he has family who are police officers, so he "walks both sides" when it comes to the relationship between the police and the Black community.[6]

At the Austin show in December, Bill Murray visited and wanted an encore and also gave him "words of encouragement."[7]

Critical reception[]

Newspaper Willamette Week commented, "For a tour dedicated to his fans, the Chicago MC spent a lot of time onstage pleasing himself."[8] Reviewing Fiasco's New York concert on February 4, Darryl Robertson of Vibe praised the vocal ability, "To see Lupe roll through top-notch bars for nearly nine minutes [...] It takes serious breath control, and a sharp mind to remember such complex raps on one song." He continued, "Overall, Lupe's energetic and passion on stage matches the same explosive and fieriness behavior that he displays on his Twitter rants. After seeing Lupe's performance, it makes one appreciate his voice, and thought-provoking—and important content all the more. Lupe really cares about hip-hop, his art and the important issues that he discusses. [...] he left it all on the stage."[9]

Billboard wrote of the first Los Angeles performance, "For an event targeting fans, it was admittedly perplexing in terms of pacing and execution."[10] Boston Globe' Franklin Soults reported for the February 10 date, "For a tumultuous decade on Atlantic Records, this Jay-Z and Kanye West protégé continually surprised listeners with just such contradictory twists of brazen, purist righteousness and broad, all-is-forgiven fun."[11]
