The Webby Awards, also known simply as the Webbys, are awards for excellence on the Internet presented annually by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a judging body composed of over three thousand industry experts and technology innovators. There are multiple categories, including for websites, advertising and media, online film and video, mobile sites and apps, and social. It was first presented in 1995 as the "Webbie Awards," before being re-established as the Webby Awards by founder Tiffany Shlain.[1]
Two winners are selected in each category, one by members of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and one by the public who cast their votes during Webby People's Voice voting. In its early years, the award was hailed as the "Internet's highest honor" and was associated with the phrase "The Oscars of the Internet."
In its 28th annual year, they received nearly 13,000 entries from all 50 states and over 70 countries worldwide. They broadcasted the awards ceremony on May 13, 2024, hosted by Amber Ruffin.[2] The AI app TextFX was entered as AI, Metaverse & Virtual, and won three Webbys for Experimental & Innovation, Arts, Culture & Events, and Best User Experience.[3] Lupe Fiasco announced this on July 6 to Twitter, congratulating the Google Creative Labs team.[4] He later posted a picture of the trophies.[5]
