"Something That I Never Had" is a song by American rapper Lupe Fiasco. It was uploaded to SoundCloud on May 12, 2015, suspected to be a cut from his album, Tetsuo & Youth, that was released earlier that year.[1]
The song is similar to "He Say She Say," which discusses the actions of one individual that affects the rest of their family. In "Something That I Never Had," the father cheats on his wife, which she discovers, and cheats on him in retaliation. Their child, however, is witness to their volatile relationship; in the third verse, he rides with his father, the father going to cheat again. The hook can serve as the person's justification for cheating—the father by wanting "something he never had" and the mother never having her husband's fidelity.
Critical reception[]
Okayplayer editor Scott Heins called it a "tender ballad" with its instrumental and singing hook, adding it to be reminiscent of the emcee's softer tracks from The Cool.[2]
