Reddit is an American social news aggregation, content rating, and discussion website. It is a public community Lupe Fiasco fans often frequent in comparison to other discussion sites, and which the rapper himself occasionally lurks on. His handle, 'YoBossWillHearOfThis,' was created on December 28, 2017. In the music video for "Precious Things," published to YouTube on January 15, 2023, features several of the Redditors' comments. On July 22, 2024, he publicly announced his exit, though will support from afar.[1]
Background[]
In preparation for his seventh studio album, Drogas Wave, Fiasco made exclusive updates to Reddit. He mentioned in his very first post the condition, "all I ask is DO NOT REPOST any of this information on any other message board site or social media platform." He explained to Business Insider, "I made a promise to my little Reddit community that I'll only discuss "DROGAS: Wave" on Reddit […] You know, I think that one of the reactions, outside of music, has just been: focus on the fans. Let them be the first to crack things, or get the exclusive or the insight."
He continued, of why he picked the forum:
It just seemed like a place where if I wasn't a rapper, I'd probably be on Reddit 24 hours a day. […] It wasn't like a bunch of fans posting up every little tidbit about my life. It just seemed like it was a little bit more serious, in terms of the conversation. It wasn't just like a bunch of fan boys, and stuff like that, or fan girls. And it was something that was direct, like you had to be on there. People were pretty cool with when I just told them, 'Look, if y'all can just keep everything that I do here on Reddit, and not go to different message boards or go to the press, or put it on a blog or something like that.' And I mean, people kind of abided by that, which has never happened anywhere else that I've tried to do something fan-direct. So I just felt like, I have their trust, they have my trust now, so it just seemed like the right community to do it in.[2]
On July 22, 2024, he announced his departure:
Peace Lupe Reddit…it's been a blast hanging out in the shadows with you guys since jump. The community you all have built here is incredible. I've tuned in to some really dope back and forths and links to material and reviews about stuff about me that I wasn't even up on. I thank you all for that. With that this will be my final visit to the Lupe Reddit. I've never really interceded on conversation that take place on here for the sake of not influencing the community or the conversations in anyway. I may have corrected a few minor things over the years or dropped an Easter egg or two but I wanted this to stay an unbiased community about me not OF me of that makes any sense. In light of the recent events of everything seeming to devolve into a "Lupe said what again about K Dot" situation and wanting to preserve the free flow of conversation here amongst redditors of all points of opinion I'm making the decision to throw a ninja smoke bomb down at the floor and move into a night without a Reddit app on my phone lol…it's all 100% love and peace and will definitely still support the community from afar and I hope it continues to grow and be a place where Lupe fans from all walks can come talk about their favorite and most hated Lupe songs, albums, conspiracy theories, reviews and general shit talking! Keep up the good work mods and casuals alike…and with that…
