The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. Its awards certification is based on the number of albums and singles sold through retail and other ancillary markets. A Gold record is a song or album that sells 500,000 units (records, tapes, and compact discs), while the Platinum award is for albums able to sell one million units, and singles selling two million units. Multi-platinum indicates 2,000,000+ units, while Diamond signifies ten million units. In 2016, with the digital age, a unit was equated to one digital or physical album sold or shipped; 10 tracks from the album downloaded; or 1,500 on-demand audio or video streams of songs from the album.
On August 31, 2022, American rapper Lupe Fiasco announced on Twitter, "Just got the 1st Platinum Album of my career..." which was for his second studio album, Lupe Fiasco's The Cool.[1] He told HipHopDX of this milestone, "I've sold millions of records. I have platinum singles and multi-platinum singles: 'Superstar,' 'The Show Goes On,' and all that stuff. So I've had platinum plaques. But I've never had a platinum album." He concluded, "So for me, it just solidifies my presence in the space and it puts me in a new kind of category." Along with this, he named The Cool to be his "number one record" based on whatever sold the most because it's "clinical and scientific."[2] As of October 2022, he has seven works certified by the RIAA.
