He was voted by GQ as "Breakout Man of the Year" in 2006,[1] won one Grammy for "Daydreamin'" in 2008, and has been nominated for eleven other Grammys throughout his career. In 2018, he received the Neighborhood Game Changer Award by the organization, United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, for M.U.R.A.L.[2] He is part of the 2014 Henry Crown Fellowship Class in recognition of his philanthropic, entrepreneurial and musical work, and has received the 2017 third-annual Chicagoness Award for his commitment and work in the community.[3]

He is a recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Professor Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he taught a course on rap for the 2022-23 academic year.[4] Near the end of March 2023, he announced of being selected to be a Saybrook Fellow at Yale University, and was honored the 2023 Rap Laureate the following month in Washington, D.C. by Words, Beats, and Life Festival.[5][6] The latter organization explained, "We chose him because of his willingness to create commercial, underground, poignant, and political music that in some way is a throwback to previous generations of MCs with the added attention of a large audience willing to engage in dialogue about tough topics connected to his music."[7]
