Hip Hop 50 Live was a one-night-only concert in celebration of fifty years of hip hop, held at the Yankee Stadium on August 11, 2023; the birthplace credited to DJ Kool Herc in The Bronx, New York, 1973. The sold-out event was produced by Mass Appeal and Live Nation.[1] American rapper Lupe Fiasco was one of the many headliners, where he performed his early hits.[2] He was accompanied by DJ Sky Gellatly and wore a TextFX t-shirt.
Background[]
Presale tickets began on June 8, 2023, before general public onsale the following day on June 9. A fundraiser livestream was hosted on Mass Appeal's YouTube channel for those that could not attend in person. All donations went towards Universal Hip Hop Museum (UHHM), a Bronx museum that preserves and commemorates the hip hop music and culture.[3]
During his performance, Fiasco gave a shout-out to the late rappers Fred the Godson, Vice Verses, Nipsey Hussle, and DMX, before he launched into "Hip-Hop Saved My Life". He stated before the final song of his set, "I was backstage jumping around like a little kid, standing around all those legends. Seeing all those people I grew up on, all those raps that I studied and learned since a little-ass kid, to be up here now, to rock at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx is so amazing, it feels so good [...] I feel like an absolute Superstar".
