Amen Break is a film directed by Mahfuz Sultan, documenting Virgil Abloh's Spring/Summer 2022 collection. It stars Lupe Fiasco, GZA, Goldie, Saul Williams, Issa Perica, Caleb Femi, JIM JOE, Kandis Williams, Thelma Buabeng, Octavia Burgel, Julian Eugene Tsukasa Williams, Damian Eugene Nagisa Williams, Shabaka Hutchings, and Malik Le Nost. The title refers to the 1969 drum solo that has been heavily sampled in popular music.
The collection has been praised by the publication August Man for "blurring the gender divide and eradicating gender labels" by its clothing and cross-cultural representation.[1] It has also been noted by Lampoon Magazine of its sustainability, which included materials obtained by organic agriculture or responsible farming, in cotton and wool, respectively. Their written review opined, "In a fusion of genders, Abloh's design merged archetypal women's silhouettes with traditional men's garments, in a transition which links his design with the subcultural expressions of empowerment and strength."[2]
Synopsis[]
A dystopian world filled with polar opposites seeks to find harmony through common threads.
Description[]
Amen Break the film explores ideas of transmission: the act of passing on something from one person to another, activating waves of change across generations, and impacting the lives of others. An abstract interpretation of the story of artist Lupe Fiasco, the film depicts a father and son united by an unnamed loss, crossing a dream world to deliver a message to the other side. By employing martial arts as another way out for young people in the Southside of Chicago amid 1970s and 80s gang turbulence, Fiasco's father impacted a generation with ideas of peace, understanding and empowerment.[3]
